Description

The Old Post Office is a terraced row of houses, now functioning as shops, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with clay tile roofs featuring raised coped verges on kneelers and integral end stacks made of course rubble. The building has two storeys and is divided into three parts.

The left part, known as The Post Office, has a configuration of two windows above one. The right-hand window is in a canted section that connects to the central part. It features plain raised surrounds, with a larger ground floor window to the right that is the original shop window. The left-hand ground floor window has been inserted into a former doorway. The ground floor windows have glazing bar sashes, while the first floor windows on the left and right have plate glass sashes, and there is a fixed light in the center of the first floor. A double-leaved, half-glazed door to the right is flanked by raised plaster quoins.

The central part has two-light plate glass casements on the first floor and three glazing bar casements on the ground floor, with the left window occupying the place of one of a former pair of matched doorways. Both windows and doorways have plaster surrounds, and there is a continuous moulded cornice hood above the doors. An oval plaque on the first floor center reads: "J. HAMBLETON/MERCER AND GROCER / Dealer in Coffee, Tea, Tobacco & Snuff."

The right part is slightly recessed and features one small casement window and a 20th-century door on the ground floor.
