Description
Riverdales and The Hermitage is a house that forms the central part of a range of three dwellings, built in the early 19th century. The structure is made of coursed and squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with a clay tile roof featuring coped verges on kneelers. There is a rough faced ashlar end stack on the right side. The building has three storeys and three windows, with 16-pane glazing bar sashes on the ground and first floors, and glazing bar casements on the second floor. The entrance features a central boarded door with a bracketed cornice hood. This building was formerly a workhouse, managed by the vestry, and after 1834, it served as the workhouse for the Alstonefield Poor Law Union. It is part of a group that includes Sunnyside and Rest Cottage.
