Description
The churchyard cross, located 6 metres east of the church porch in Eyam, dates back to the early 9th century. It is made of stone and features a square base that tapers into a shaft, which is topped by a Celtic cross. The east face of the shaft is adorned with foliage scrolls, while the north and south faces display interlace patterns. The west side of the shaft features circular interlace at the base, with two figurative scenes above: the Virgin and Christ, with an angel holding a trumpet below. The head of the cross is decorated with carved angels in panels. Although a section of the shaft is missing at the top, the cross remains unusually complete. Additionally, it is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
