Description
Sheldon House is a house dating from 1774, located in the parish of Monyash, on Chapel Street. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with quoins, featuring limestone dressings. Continuous stringcourses run along the ground and first floors. The roof is covered with stone slate, and there are large gable end stacks with plain banding. The building has two bays, with the south bay projecting. It is three storeys high. A central 20th-century porch, designed in a traditional style, occupies the corner of the two bays. To the north is a 20th-century three-light flush mullion window. A visible line marks the location of a former staircase to the first-floor door, between the window and the porch. To the south is a blocked doorcase and a three-light flush mullion window. Above these, there are two similar windows. A blocked door is located above the porch. A square plaque with moulded edges, inscribed with a circle and the date 'B 1774', sits above the south bay. Two more three-light flush mullion windows are positioned above this. All mullions and window openings are 20th-century replacements. The building was formerly used as the Magpie Leadmine Pay Office and holds group value as a well-preserved example of an 18th-century building.
