Description
The YHA Hostel, originally built as co-operative stores and a warehouse in 1887 and converted around 1974, is a four-storey building located in Fountain Square, Youlgreave. It is constructed of coursed squared rock-faced gritstone with gritstone dressings and quoins, topped by a hipped slate roof with stone side wall stacks.
The facade features three bays and is five bays long. The ground floor has an arcade of three semi-circular headed arches with ovolo moulding. The central arch contains a doorcase, while the arches on either side have large windows with rounded tops. Each fanlight is made of white glass, with gold inscriptions: 'GROCERIES AND PROVISIONS' on the east side, 'CO-OPERATIVE STORES' in the center, and 'DRAPERIES AND CLOTHING' on the west side.
Above the ground floor, there are two pairs of plain sashes in chamfered surrounds with drip-moulds, followed by another two pairs of semi-circular headed plain sashes in chamfered surrounds. Between these pairs is a semi-circular headed niche, which is decorated with a carving of a beehive and inscribed with 'Erected AD 1887, Established 1872'. The entrance features steps leading up to a paved slope, flanked by iron railings. Additionally, there are double plank doors located to the west side. The building is included for its group value only.
