Description

Rose Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from the 16th or 17th century, and incorporating medieval masonry, with alterations from the 18th or early 19th century. It is constructed from a mix of random rubble and squared stone, including reused Roman stones and large squared medieval stones, and has a Welsh slate roof. The cottage is two storeys high, with two broad bays and a central door. It has 18th or early 19th century window openings containing 20th-century sashes, and a renewed brick end stack and a corniced ridge stack. A very large roughly-chamfered plinth runs along the rear. The ground floor walls are approximately 4 feet thick, thinning slightly above. The cottage is situated within the walls of the Roman Fort at High Rochester.
