Description

Hethpool House is a house built in 1919, as indicated by a roundel in the rear porch gable. It was designed by Cahill of Alnwick and is situated on the site of a house built in 1687, incorporating some of its masonry. The house underwent additions in 1928 by Robert Mauchlin of Newcastle for Sir Arthur Munro Sutherland. It features a roughcast exterior with ashlar dressings and a Devonian slate roof, showcasing an Arts-and-Crafts style. The building is two storeys high with a double-span roof, a projecting wing at the rear, and a later round tower attached to the right.

The original structure has six bays, with a doorway located in the second bay. This doorway features a glazed door set in a large gabled porch with a round-arched entry and a sundial in the gable. The house has 12-pane sash windows in raised surrounds. To the left, there is a high projecting round tower with similar windows, a shield displaying the Sutherland coat of arms, and a conical roof. A second, lower rounded projection is attached to the left side of this tower and has a conical pent roof. The rear of the house has similar decorative features, including a doorway with a moulded surround and a lintel dated 1687.

Inside, the house reflects a contemporary restrained Arts-and-Crafts style, featuring massive rough beams, early 18th-century style fireplaces, and a staircase with turned balusters.
