Description
The Church of St Hilda is a parish church located in Bilsdale Midcable, built in 1851 by Banks and Barry. It is constructed from snecked rockfaced sandstone with decorative dressings. The roof is made of clay tiles featuring fishscale bands and a spiky tiled ridge, with stone copings and a stone spirelet. The church comprises a nave, chancel, south porch, and north vestry, with a west double bellcote topped by a short spire. The design is in the lancet style, with the bellcote featuring tall gables facing east and west, and twin bell openings with round spandrels. Above the bellcote is a small square tower leading to the spire.
The nave has five bays, a chamfered plinth, narrow lancet windows, and a corbel table at the eaves. The west window mirrors the design of the bell openings. The south porch has a large multi-moulded entrance, while the chancel consists of two bays with a stepped three-light east window. Inside, the church is plastered and features an arch-braced timber roof. The chancel arch is large and multi-moulded with dogtooth detailing, and the chancel is raised. There are Caernarvon arches leading to the vestry doors from the chancel and in the external wall.
