Description

The dovecot located to the north of Seave Green House is a structure from the early 19th century, built over a storeroom and a privy. It is made of coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone and features a main roof covered with pantiles, complete with a stone ridge, copings, kneelers, and a stack. A small roof over the stair head is finished with stone flags. The building has two storeys and consists of one square bay. An external stone stair on the left leads to a covered landing with a monolith elliptical-arched entrance. The first floor slightly jetties out, with pigeonholes above the landing roof that serve as an alighting shelf. There are small single casement windows at the ground floor left and the first floor centre. A square chimney with a pot made of hollow stone drums is also present. The rear elevation features boarded doors: one for the privy on the right and another of stable type for the storeroom, possibly a pony box, on the left. There is a boarded door leading to the first-floor chamber, which contains a small stone fireplace, flanking nest boxes, and a stone-flagged floor. The dovecot is recognized for its early 19th-century date, its relatively unaltered condition, the survival of many original fixtures and fittings, and its group value with Seave Green House.
