Description
The former house to the west of Low Orterley Farmhouse is a building that likely dates back to around 1600, with alterations made around 1700 and later. It is constructed from roughly-tooled squared sandstone, with smaller stones above in the right bay, and more evenly-coursed stone in the left bay, which probably reflects the changes made in the 18th century. The building has a pantiled roof featuring stone coping, kneelers, and a chimney stack. It is a single storey with a loft, consisting of two irregular bays.
On the right side, there is a small fire window, a small window on the left, and another window above it. The entrance is located on the right gable end, featuring a boarded door with a small Yorkshire sash window to the left and a blocked chamfered window above. The chimney at the end is corniced.
Inside, the bays are separated by a full cruck truss with a "type C" apex, which has a fairly low collar and a low tie from which the cut-off joists of the original first floor project. A buttress on the opposite (south) wall may have supported the floor. This wall also contains an inset trough and a cupboard recess. The cruck truss has been underbuilt in stone at a later date, creating a complete division between the two bays. The north bay retains the original chamfered beam of the open fire area, along with chamfered joists. Within the fire area, there is a notable moulded stone fireplace dating from around 1700.
