Description
The Church of St James the Greater is a Grade II* listed building, constructed in 1902 by architect Temple Moore. It is made of lightly-tooled snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a plain clay-tiled roof. The church is designed in a modified Early English style and includes a west tower, a three-bay nave with a south porch, and a three-bay chancel with a small north vestry extension.
The slim square tower is one stage high, with a prominent chamfered west plinth and a corbelled-out battlemented parapet that includes a waterspout. The tower features a double-chamfered tall west lancet and shouldered-arched bell openings. The nave has similar windows, while the chancel south side includes two small lancets and two small square-headed chamfered windows. There is a shouldered-arched priest's door, and the east window consists of three stepped lancets.
The gabled south porch has a heavy battened door adorned with impressive ironwork. Inside, the church showcases exposed stone and a ribbed barrel wood roof. Notable woodwork includes heavy pine benches, an oak pulpit, lectern, and choir seats. The interior also features a carved marble reredos, a linked sedile and piscina, and mosaic floors in the chancel, stepped sanctuary, and center aisle.
