Description
Guides Cottage and The Retreat are two houses that were built together in the early 18th century. They are constructed from coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone and feature raised quoins. The roof is pantiled with stone copings and kneelers, and there are brick stacks, one of which is rendered. The buildings stand two storeys high with an attic and a full-height basement, which has been revealed due to the removal of buildings in front.
The structure has three bays in total, with the entrance located at the rear. On the ground floor, there are three-light 24-pane windows with central opening sashes, while the first floor features early 19th century 6-pane sash windows. There are traces of earlier, lower windows that were likely stone-mullioned. The Retreat includes a raking dormer with a Yorkshire sash.
On the right side of Guides Cottage, there is a top-glazed boarded door at basement level, set in a narrow-chamfered alternating-block surround with a heavy lintel. The upper floors have small windows, most of which are in old chamfered openings. The gable copings are adorned with small curved kneelers.
