Description
Skelton's Tower is an early 19th-century shooting lodge built for Reverend Robert Skelton. It is constructed from dressed sandstone with sandstone ashlar dressings and has a square plan. The building is two stories high with a single bay front. There is a doorway to the right featuring a bordered herringbone-tooled lintel, and a pointed window in a plain raised surround to the left on the first floor. A similar window is found on the first floor of the return wall to the left. The windows retain remnants of iron glazing bars. Inside, a plain staircase rises against the wall to the left of the entrance, and there is a small fireplace in a plain raised surround on the first floor. The tower is an important local landmark, situated high on a hilltop overlooking the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in Newtondale. It was noted to be part ruined at the time of resurvey.
