Description
This outbuilding, located approximately 50 yards east of York House, is a farmhouse and byre of the longhouse type, now serving as a lambing shed. It likely dates from the early 17th century and is constructed from coursed squared tooled sandstone of good quality, set on a massive plinth. The roof has been renewed with galvanised iron. The building is one storey high with an attic over the south end, which is the parlour end, and consists of four bays.
There is a wide inserted doorway to the right of the centre, with blocked windows featuring internal splays to the left, and an inserted window to the right. The right return displays a three-light chamfered stone-mullioned window and a two-light similar window above. The rear elevation has an inserted door on the left and another small chamfered window. The north wall has been rebuilt.
Inside, the fireplace and chimney wall have disappeared. There are three pairs of crucks with low collars and "type C" tops, where the blades are tenoned into a narrow saddle that directly supports the ridge piece. The collars extend to support purlins, which are now missing, and the external roof structure is modern. The crucks are fairly straight, except for a low elbow where they begin to sink into the wall masonry.
