Description
York House and the adjoining outbuilding to the west is a farmhouse and byre with origins dating back to the 17th century, although the house part was rebuilt in 1780, as indicated by a date on the keystone. The building is constructed of coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone and features pantiles on the downhouse and concrete tiles on the main house, along with stone copings, kneelers, and stacks. It has a linear plan that includes a hearth passage, with a loose-box and stable that connect to the kitchen/downhouse.
The main house is two storeys high and has two bays, while the kitchen has one wide bay that incorporates the passage. There are two additional bays of the outbuilding to the left. The main entrance features a modern part-glazed through-passage door set under a keyed lintel. The main house has late 19th-century sash windows in raised tooled-and-margined surrounds. A wide, modern three-light kitchen window has been inserted into a blocked garage doorway, which itself was placed in the original window area. Above this is a three-light stone-mullioned window with small casements. To the left of the main entrance is a boarded door with a heavy lintel and alternating-block jambs, along with an inserted rebated door and a small window. There is also a pitching door above. The main house features corniced chimneys at both ends and to the left of the kitchen, along with curved kneelers. At the rear, there are lean-to dairy and storeroom extensions.
Inside, the kitchen has a fire beam and joists with quarter-round moulding, along with a chamfered doorway from the passage. In the forehouse, there is an 18th-century fireplace with side cupboards and a moulded beam. The right end parlour features a multi-moulded beam, though it is unclear if this is a survival or a reproduction.
