Description

Birch Hall Inn is a public house, tearoom, and shop, likely built in the mid to late 18th century, with a mid 19th-century extension and alterations made by Ralph and Mary Dowson. The original 18th-century section is constructed from whitewashed sandstone, while the extension features hammered sandstone. The roofs are covered with pantiles.

The front of the 18th-century part is two storeys high and has three windows, while the three-storey, one-window extension is built against sloping ground. The original front includes paired six-panel doors at the center, with four-pane sash windows on each side, the right window having shutters. Similar windows are found on the first floor, all with painted stone sills. There are chimney stacks at the left end and right of center.

The extension features paired part-glazed doors, flanked by large-pane fixed light shop windows. On the first floor, there is a 16-pane sash window with a painted stone sill, and an 8-pane sash window on the second floor. The extension has a hipped roof with a ridge stack. The right side of the building is accessed by an external flight of steps, leading to six-panel doors on the first floor and part-glazed openings on the second floor.
