Description
The Lord Nelson is a public house from the 19th century that has been converted into a private house. The original building dates back to 1678 and was constructed for Peter Braithwaite. It was raised, altered, and extended around 1850. The structure is made of rubble sandstone with sections of tooled sandstone and features a pantile roof.
The building has two low storeys with irregularly placed windows and a two-storey, one-bay extension on the right side. The extension includes a 19th-century six-panel door, while the original front has a left-of-centre board door beneath a timber lintel. To the left of this door is a sixteen-pane sash window beneath a tooled lintel, and a shuttered two-pane fixed light further left. On the right of the board door is a squat eight-pane fixed light. The first floor has two square eight-pane sash windows and a flat-roofed half dormer at the left end. The gables are coped, and there are block kneelers, with stacks at the ends and left of centre.
At the rear, there is a surviving three-light chamfered mullioned window. A datestone relief carved with '1678/P B W T' has been reset in the first floor. The interior has not been inspected, but it is said to contain a corbelled stone fireplace and a stone heck bench.
