Description

Cropton Mill is a corn mill and attached house dating from the early 19th century, with later 19th-century alterations and an extension. The building is constructed of sandstone with quoins and features a pantile roof with brick stacks. It has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window front to the house and a two-storey, two-window extension on the right that is of equal height. The mill projects as a cross wing on the left side.

The house has a four-panel door with a divided overlight, located to the right of a 16-pane sash window. There are 8-pane sashes on the ground floor to the far left and above the door, and a 12-pane sash on the first floor to the left. The attic features a large, three-light horizontal-sliding sash window. All windows have stone sills and lintels for the ground and first-floor openings, and there are end stacks. The extension includes a later 19th-century three-window canted bay with large-pane sashes on the ground floor and 12-pane sashes with stone sills and lintels on the first floor, along with an end stack on the right.

The mill section has a 12-pane sash window on the ground floor, a slatted window on the first floor, and a square opening in the attic, all with stone sills and lintels. The roof is hipped and features a weathercock at the rear. The rear of the mill has a stack of boarded lifting doors to the left of pivoting windows, which also have stone sills and roughly-tooled lintels. Remains of the collateral low-breast wheel can still be seen, which was driven by a race leading from a mill pond created by a weir at the confluence of Cropton Beck and the River Seven.
