Description
Ugthorpe House is a house, probably built in the early 18th century, with restorations and wings added in the early 20th century. The original part of the house features herring-bone-tooled sandstone, while the wings are made of narrowly-coursed rockfaced sandstone with tooled-and-marginal dressings. The roofs are pantiled, with tile ridges, stone ridged copings, finials, and stacks.
The original house has two storeys and three windows, with gabled, projecting L-bay wings. The central entrance has a half-glazed door with a low overlight, a shaped lintel, and a hoodmould. There are 2-light stone-mullioned windows with leaded casements above and on either side on both floors, all of which have been restored. The left wing features 5-light stone-mullioned windows on both floors, set under continuous dripmoulds. The right wing includes a two-storey bay with canted corners, a 6-light window, and a parapet. The inner returns of the wings have smaller similar windows, and all windows in the wings are transomed. The bay parapet and the sides and peaks of the gables have ball-on-pedestal finials. The original house has end chimneys, while the wings have corniced stacks on their outer walls.
Inside, the house has been largely restored in the early 20th century but retains one plain 18th-century stone fireplace surround that contains a modified Yorkshire range with reckon. The beams and panelling are of high quality and have also been restored.
