Description
Wood Hill House and attached barn is a 17th-century farmhouse with alterations, the earliest part dated 1737, as indicated by initials “GH” carved over the door lintel. It is constructed of coursed, lightly-tooled sandstone, and has a roof now covered with concrete tiles, featuring stone copings, kneelers, and stacks. The building is arranged with a hearth-passage entry plan, incorporating a downhouse to the right and a barn to the left.
The house is two storeys high and comprises three bays, with an irregular facade. The barn has one bay, and the downhouse has two, with a lower roofline. A blocked passage door is set under a flattened Tudor arch, with a 20th-century window inserted above. A blocked, chamfered and quoined ground-floor window and a small first-floor sash are present on the main house’s front, with the remaining windows being blank. Stepped eaves, curved kneelers, and end stacks are notable features of the house, with a further stack to the right of the downhouse. External stone steps lead to a loft door in the barn.
The rear elevation has a passage door within a chamfered surround and a flattened Tudor arch. A round-headed window sits above, and a blocked fire window is located to the right, with other windows being large and of 20th-century style. The barn includes a stable door within a chamfered surround and an inserted door to the left.
