Description
Providence Health Farmhouse and attached cowsheds is a farmhouse and cowsheds dating from the mid-18th century, with some alterations from the 19th century. The cowsheds are likely from the 16th century. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed sandstone and features a pantile roof with brick stacks. Originally, it had a two-cell, direct-entry plan with doors on opposite sides, and a later outshut was added.
The farmhouse is one-and-a-half storeys high with a two-window front, while the single-storey cowshed to the left has three bays. There is a plank door to the left of the centre, and two-light horizontal sliding sashes on either side, along with a fire window at the right end. All ground floor openings have hammer-dressed lintels, and the windows have stone sills. The gable walls are coped with plain kneelers, and there are end stacks on the house.
Inside, a 19th-century timber partition in the left room creates a later lobby-entry plan. The ground floor rooms have plank doors and exposed grooved beams. Although the fireplace in the right room has been demolished, the stone lintel remains. The cowsheds appear to be older, as indicated by the lower stone courses of the house. The internal walls of the cowshed, which divide it into three sections, are made of cob, and there is a dovecote on the end wall. At the time of re-survey, the property was unoccupied.
