Description
This is a boundary stone, part of a pair, dated 1813. It is made of gritstone and is roughly-tooled with a round head, standing approximately 1.2 meters high. The west face of the stone is inscribed with the following text:
GOATHLAND BOUNDARY DETERMINED AT YORK ASSIZES 1813
The second boundary stone marks the extent of the civil parish of Sneaton. On 15 March 1813, a legal action was brought by the Lord of the Manor of Sleights against the Lord of the Manor of Goathland to determine the boundary and the extent of grazing rights for the two parishes.
