Description

York Cross, also known as Jack Cross, is a medieval waymarker cross located on Sneaton Whinstone Ridge. It features a sandstone socket with a gritstone shaft. The hollow square socket stone supports a broken cross shaft that stands approximately 1 metre high and is inscribed with the word "JACK" above a form of a Maltese cross. The socket also bears the initials OSBM. This cross served as a waymarker on the medieval Abbey road that connected Whitby to Pickering, passing through Falling Foss and Ellerbeck.
