Description
John Cross is a wayside cross and boundary marker located in Sneaton. It features a medieval socket stone and an 18th-century boundary stone. The socket stone is hollowed and rectangular in shape. The boundary stone, which has the initial 'C' inscribed on its east face, has replaced the original cross shaft and is now lying flat. John Cross was situated between a bog and a steep slope and was part of a series of waymarkers along the old road from Whitby to Pickering via Red Gate and May Beck. The name may be derived from John de Steyngrave, who was the Abbot of Whitby from 1245 to 1258.
