Description
The Minstead Memorial Cross is located at the south-west corner of the green in the center of Minstead village, next to a well that is shown on the earliest Ordnance Survey 1:2500 map from 1869. The well is capped with a square wooden cover featuring ornamental wrought iron hinges and a handle. Surrounding the memorial and well is an octagonal area of paving enclosed by an oak post-and-rail fence.
The memorial stands approximately 3 meters tall and is constructed from Bath stone. It features a floriated cross atop a hexagonal shaft that rises from a moulded base. This base is set on a square plinth that displays the inscriptions, which are carved in relief. The front of the plinth reads, "IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN FROM/ THIS PARISH/ WHO DIED FOR/ KING & COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT/ WAR 1914 - 1919/ 1939 - 1945." The back of the plinth states, "THE NAMES OF THE FALLEN/ ARE INSCRIBED ON A MARBLE/ TABLET IN THE PARISH CHURCH." The plinth itself rests on a low, square step.
