Description

The School and School House, located in Ashurst and Colbury, is a former Church of England school that now serves as a primary school. Built around 1870, likely by architect B. Ferrey, the building features early 20th-century extensions. Its walls are constructed of flint with stone dressings, and it includes bands, chamfered openings, and stepped buttresses on the south hall. The upper part of the house displays exposed framing with plaster infill and is jettied on decorative brackets. There are later sections made of red brickwork in English bond. The steep tile roof has a half-hip over the school. The layout consists of a hall school with an attached house as a crosswing, featuring a porch entrance at the junction of the two parts. The north-east elevation has two wide and one narrow window, separated by buttresses, alongside the gable ends of the two-storey house, which has one window. The windows are casements, and there is a stone-framed bay below the jetty on the house. The open timber-framed porch sits on a stone base with a gable and has details similar to the porch of Christchurch. The north-west elevation of the house is nearly symmetrical, featuring a gabled central window above a doorway with a pointed arch, flanked by a window on each side, with the east side narrowing.
