Description

Monks Well is a wellhouse built to supply water for the Abbey, dating from the late 13th century. This stone building has a circular plan with a diameter of 4 meters and features a domed roof. On one side, there is a shouldered-arch doorway. Inside, the wellhouse has a vaulted roof and a stone bench around the walls. The well was 're-discovered' in the 18th century when the Duke of Montagu had it connected to a hollowed tree trunk to supply water to the village, and it continued to do so until after the Second World War.
