Description
The Outer Gatehouse ruins and a section of the precinct wall at Beaulieu Manor Estate date back to the 13th century, with the gatehouse itself being rebuilt in the 19th century. The structure is made of rubble stone with stone dressing and features an old plain tile roof. The outer gatehouse includes an archway with a room above, topped by a tall gabled roof that has a clock tower. There is a lean-to room on one side, while on the other side, there is a one-and-a-half storey, one-bay cottage. The wall extends approximately 50 meters from the gatehouse and runs beside the remains of Abbey Mill within the precinct.
The gatehouse features a central late 13th-century segmental-head archway. The rebuilt gables have three loopholes on the outer gable, along with two rectangular openings and a pointed lancet. The clock tower, which is square in plan and covered in tile hanging, has clock faces and louvred openings beneath a hipped roof. The lean-to has rectangular windows at either end and a gabled dormer on the side. Above the lean-to, there is a 19th-century two-shafted stone stack.
On the cottage side, there are rectangular windows at both ends and a door at the inner end, with a gabled dormer on the hip of the roof and another 19th-century two-shafted stack nearby. The wall, which starts about 3 meters high with gabled coping made of inclined stones, runs from the corner of the gatehouse for 40 meters east before turning northeast to connect with the corner of Abbey Gate Cottage. For details on the mill remains, refer to the Victoria County History, Volume IV, published in 1991, page 632.
