Description
The Montagu Arms is a hotel built in 1888 by W H Mitchell and extended in 1924 by Bizan and Fletcher. It has been altered internally since its construction. The building is made of brick with stone dressings and features some blue header decoration. The first floor is tile-hung or timber-framed with plaster infill, and it has a plain and fishscale tile roof.
Designed in a Tudor-Jacobean style with elements of Vernacular revival, the original part of the hotel is two storeys high with an attic and consists of four bays. At the rear, there is a two-bay wing along the upper part of High Street, while a later lower two-storey and attic wing with four bays projects to the front. The main facade has projecting gabled bays at each end, with one being two storeys high and the other three storeys, and a jettied gable over the centre. All gables are adorned with bargeboards and finials.
There is an off-centre rectangular porch that is half-glazed and has a hip roof. On either side of the porch are stone mullioned and transomed windows, while the upper floors feature timber windows. All windows are fitted with leaded casements. The wing along the upper part of the street has a stepped, shaped gable at the end of the main range, a gabled timber frame section with a balcony, and a carriageway below a canted bay under the gable. The roof includes gabled dormers, and there are stacks at the end of the main range and on the ridge, set diagonally with clustered shafts.
