Description
These almshouses, numbered 1-5, were likely built around 1864 by W. Butterfield. They consist of two connected ranges forming an L-shaped plan. The shorter, four-bay range fronts the road and exhibits symmetry. It has a brick plinth with timber-frame and plaster upper walls and a plain tile roof, with brick and stone stacks. A canted bay on a plinth sits beneath a gable with decorative bargeboards. The central doorway has a six-panel black and white door, sheltered by a gabled hood with bargeboards, and is flanked by two-light casement windows. A substantial chimney with a large rectangular gabled base and a smaller rectangular stack with pilasters and a moulded head is located centrally on the roof. The longer, six-bay range mirrors the appearance of the first, with a similar door and window in the first bay. A plainer ridge stack sits between the two ranges.
