Description

The Church of the Holy Ascension is a parish church built between 1854 and 1855 by H. Woodyer. It is constructed of red brick with blue chequerwork in English bond, featuring Caen and Chilmark stone dressings, and has a slate roof. The layout includes a chancel with a north vestry and organ chamber, along with a nave.

The east end of the chancel features a five-light window with Kentish tracery and setback buttresses. The vestry has a two-light east window, and the organ room is located to the north. To the south, there are one and two-light Geometrical windows. The nave includes a plinth and has, on both sides towards the east, a short two-light window and two two-light Geometrical windows. The northern windows are flanked by buttresses, while the southern windows have further east a gabled porch to the west. The porch features stone offsets and a two-order doorway with a cinquefoiled hood. The west side has setback buttresses and a wall with offsets on each side of the centre halfway up, along with a two-light window with a rose in the head above a large double bellcote.

Inside, the chancel arch is supported by a cluster of columns. The nave contains stained glass in both the east and west windows, and features a complex king-post roof. Most of the fittings are from the 20th century, except for the stone font with its cover.
