Description
Stable Cottages and attached stables, carriage house and railings at Hamptworth Lodge are a pair of cottages connected to stable blocks and a carriage house, now used as workshops. They were built around 1870 for George Morrison of Hamptworth Lodge. The structure features Flemish bond brickwork, tiled roofs, and brick stacks.
The cottages are two stories high with three bays. The central bay projects and has an elliptical-headed four-panel door, with two-light casements on either side and three two-light casements on the first floor. The sides of the cottages have 12-pane sashes on the ground floor and casements on the first floor.
At the rear of the cottages are single-storey stable blocks arranged in parallel ranges, each with planked doors and four 12-pane sashes. The roofs of these ranges have two vents and are topped with pyramidal tiled roofs featuring ball finials and louvred vents, along with brick stacks.
The carriage house, now an implement store, has double wooden doors and a continuous verandah supported by cast-iron posts. The entrance side of the courtyard is enclosed by a wall made of English bond brick, which features attractive cast-iron spearhead railings attached to the sides of the cottages, along with double gates that also have spearheads.
