Description
Scales Farmhouse and attached farm buildings date back to 1763, as indicated by an inscribed lintel reading "Thos & Ann Dufton." The farmhouse is constructed from stone rubble, painted, and topped with a slate roof. The south elevation features two storeys and two bays, with a bank barn located to the right. An outbuilding forms a projecting wing to the left and extends to the rear. The house includes sashed windows with glazing bars and stone surrounds, along with a central entrance that has a six-fielded-panel door. The barn contains four cow house doors, with the first and third now converted into windows, as well as winnowing doors. It has a gable-end and a cross-axial stack. The wing features a large inserted sliding door. At the rear of the house, there is a continuous outshut under a catslide roof, which includes a window with a flat-faced mullion and transom, along with an entrance. The barn has an entrance in the cheeks, and the wing also has a cross-axial stack. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have a stone stair and a fireplace with a cornice, according to the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England notes.
