Description
Scalegate Farmhouse and attached farm buildings are located in Askham. The farmhouse dates from the early 17th century and was altered in 1765, with additions made around 1700 and later. It is constructed of stone rubble with some ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The west elevation has two storeys and two bays, with 3-light single-chamfered-mullioned windows, where the first-floor windows have only one mullion. The central entrance is framed by an eared architrave and features a datestone with relief decoration and the inscription "J and MH/1765". Above the entrance is an inverted heart-shaped opening with cable moulding, indicating the presence of a gabled porch. There is an ashlar cross-axial stack with a cap.
To the north of the farmhouse is a small outbuilding, while to the south is a cow house with a gabled end bay that marks the rear wing. The cow house has three entrances, two windows, and a first-floor entrance; the gabled bay features an entrance flanked by windows. A barn to the south has a segmental-headed entrance, a blocked entrance, and ventilation slots. There is a re-entrant first-floor entrance leading up steps to the cow house, and a lean-to outshut at the southern end. The rear of the farmhouse includes a 19th-century gabled wing with a blocked chamfered window. The northern outbuilding has a large entrance and a small-paned casement. The cow house features a first-floor entrance and a two-light hollow-chamfered-mullioned window, although one mullion is missing. The wing has a large entrance to the south. Inside the farmhouse, there is a fireplace with a corbelled lintel and a brick heck partition, along with stop-chamfered beams.
