Description
High Rough Hill is a house, now derelict as of 1987, likely built in the early 18th century. It is constructed of roughcast stone rubble and has a slate roof. The southeast elevation features two storeys and four bays, with the fourth bay possibly added later. Most windows are two-light with flat-faced mullions set in chamfered reveals, although the second bay has two-light single-chamfered-mullioned windows on each floor, and the third bay has a three-light flat-faced window on the ground floor. The ground floor windows are blocked, and the first bay on the first floor has small-paned glazing. There are also blocked fire windows in the third and fourth bays. The entrance in the fourth bay has chamfered reveals and remnants of a date reading '17'. The building has a truncated cross-axial stack and a gable-end stack.
On the northwest elevation, there is an outshut under a catslide roof, which includes a chamfered stair light and a re-entrant lean-to porch. Inside, there is a cross-wall and two tie beam and strut trusses. The first floor has been removed, but remnants of a richly moulded ceiling from the late 18th century and parts of a fluted frieze remain. There is a rounded stair wing with a winding stair, likely made of stone. Cupboards are dated 1700, 1731, and 1870, while a plank and muntin partition has been removed. The fireplace features a moulded inset architrave, and there is another fireplace with an architrave on the first floor. The other end of the house has a blocked two-light wooden-chamfered-mullioned window with one intermediate bar.
