Description

Thwaites Mill is a cornmill and sawmill located in Millom Without, likely built in the 19th century, with a sawmill added in the late 19th century. The structure is made of stone rubble with some ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The cornmill section to the west has gabled wings on the south and north sides, with small square windows, some of which are boarded. Two first-floor windows have small-paned fixed glazing, and the entrances on the south and west sides are fitted with plank doors. The north wing is built into the slope of the ground.

To the east, there is a gabled wheelhouse that contains an iron and timber wheel, which is fed by an enclosed concrete channel coming from the north. The sawmill is attached to the east of the cornmill. The gable ends of the building feature ball finials. The large south wing, which was originally open-fronted, has now been infilled with corrugated iron. The rear of the building has a large entrance with a pentice and a boarded window. The interior has not been inspected but is said to retain its machinery.
