Description
The charcoal barns, located to the west of the Duddon Iron Furnace, date from the early 18th century, with a later barn added to the west. Constructed from stone rubble, these barns currently have no roof and are arranged in an L-plan. The earlier barn, situated to the north-east, features a segmental arched opening on its gable end and a first-floor opening leading to the later barn. The later barn to the south-west is built into the slope of the ground and includes a two-storey lean-to that projects to the north-east, along with an entrance that has a timber lintel. The inner side of the south-west wall, which is built into the ground, displays large raking buttresses. There are two entrances at the upper level, and the inner side of the north-east wall is coated with slag in its central part. This site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
