Description
The Church of St Anne is a Grade II listed building located in Thwaites, Millom, built in 1854 by architect E G Paley. It is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The church consists of a nave with a south aisle and a chancel. The structure has a weathered base, and both the nave and chancel have steep roofs with coped gables and crosses.
The four-bay nave includes a west end with clasped buttresses that transition into angle buttresses. It has three windows with two lights and plate tracery beneath a wheel window, and the entrance features a segmental-pointed head with a hoodmould. The north elevation has two-light plate tracery windows and a small gabled outbuilding. The east end is highlighted by a gabled bellcote.
The lean-to aisle has two-light single-chamfered plate tracery windows, while the clerestory displays trefoils in roundels. The gabled porch has an entrance of one order and angle buttresses. The chancel is supported by diagonal buttresses and features east stepped triple lancets, three lancets on the south side, one on the north side, and a lean-to north vestry with a three-light north window. There is also a single light and an entrance with a shouldered lintel on the east side.
Inside, the church boasts round piers and double-chamfered arches forming the arcade, along with waggon roofs. The chancel arch is supported by short corbelled shafts.
