Description

COLTON BOUTH SD 38 NW 6/34 Barn approx. 30m to south of Old Hall Farmhouse (q.v.)

Bank barn. Probably C18 with later additions and alterations. Stone rubble with slate roof. North elevation has central gallery under catslide roof up stone steps; to left a 2-storey extension gabled to returns with lateral stack, and lean-to outshut; to right a gabled wing. Wing has entrance with moulded opening and escutcheon to lintel with entwined initials: 'CWC' and date 1713, flanking windows and upper loading door. Gallery has paired doors, with pivot hinges and pegs to rear. Left return has paired doors to rear outshut, 3 cow- house doors with 2 inserted windows, and projecting gabled wing with entrance and window to each floor. Rear has outshut under catslide roof and paired barn doors up bank; windows and entrance to lower level to right. Roof has 2 collar and tie beam trusses and 4 C20 steel trusses.
