Description
Glen View Old Smithy is a house with an attached outbuilding that was formerly a smithy, dating back to 1697, with later alterations and additions. The house is constructed of roughcast stone, while the outbuilding is made of stone rubble with slobbered mortar, both featuring slate roofs, with the older roof on the left side. The house has two storeys and two bays. The ground floor includes a window in the first bay with small-paned fixed glazing and an opening light, while the second bay has sashed windows with glazing bars on both the ground and first floors. The entrance features a 20th-century gabled porch. There is a 19th-century brick gable-end stack and a cross-axial stack.
The outbuilding, also two storeys, has a sliding door and a small window with small-paned glazing on the left side, along with paired loading doors above. A stone on the right side is dated 1697 and features initials, likely "MP-", along with three nails to the side, and images of a hammer, pincers, and horseshoe below, all framed by a cable-mould border. The rear of the building has a small gabled outshut and varied fenestration, with a gabled projection on the left return and a small-paned casement on the right return. The datestone is significant as a rare example of a trade sign.
