Description

Nibthwaite Grange is a house likely dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions from the early 19th century. The exterior is roughcast (a type of rendering) with limestone detailing and a slate roof. The garden facade is two storeys high and five bays wide, with the final two bays recessed, lower in height, gabled, and belonging to the original structure. The first three bays have hipped roofs, while the central bay projects forward under a triangular pediment. The building has a plain stone base and a sill band on the first floor, with wide, bracketed eaves. The windows have architraves and are sash windows with glazing bars; the ground floor windows have decorative panels beneath. The front entrance features an architrave, half-glazed doors, and an overlight (the window above the door) with glazing bars and margin lights. Chimneys are located on the pediment and at the returns. The last two recessed bays have a gable-end chimney, and no ground floor windows. The rear of the house, which is four bays long and irregular in design, has sash windows, some of which are paired. A tall stair window with small panes of fixed glazing is also present, along with a recessed entrance sheltered by a flat canopy. There are two cross-axial chimneys. Inside, the staircase has a ramped handrail and a column supported on vase-shaped balusters. There is reportedly a niche with a landscape painting in the head of the staircase, although this has not been observed. The house was originally a grange (a farm or estate attached to a monastery) belonging to Furness Abbey.
