Description

Nibthwaite Mill is a bobbin mill incorporating the remains of an iron furnace, now converted into a house. The furnace dates back to 1735, while the bobbin mill itself was constructed around 1840. The building is constructed of stone rubble with slate roofs. It is two storeys high with a basement and consists of six bays. The east elevation features a lean-to outshut at ground floor level and a gabled wing, now used as a garage. Windows are fitted with slated lintels and 20th-century small-paned casements, and the entrance has a glazed door on the return of the outshut. A gable-end stack is present. The north gable end has a gabled porch, while the south gable end has a window. The west elevation is built against the slope of the ground on its northern side, and on the southern side contains an older, slightly battered wall which previously belonged to the iron furnace. This wall has a dripcourse that slopes upwards to the left. A segmental-headed entrance is found on the basement level, again with 20th-century casements. A small attached building to the south projects to the west, with a later extension alongside the south gable end. The basement retains remnants of the iron furnace, showcasing large, splayed arched openings on either side. One of these openings has an iron lintel inscribed "N 1736". An adjacent bay features a substantial segmental arch and a timber base associated with a bellows. This building represents a significant survival from both the Furness iron industry and the later bobbin industry, and is designated as a scheduled ancient monument alongside the nearby mill race and wheel pit.
