Description
Low Greengate House and Cottage, along with Hoopers Cottage, are three houses dating from the 17th century or early 18th century, with later alterations and additions. They are constructed of roughcast and have slate roofs, forming an L-plan layout. The building has two storeys and a south elevation featuring five bays, with the first two bays being later additions. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, and those in the first two bays have horns, while the first-floor windows are topped with gablets. The ground floor windows in the third and fifth bays have dripstones.
The entrance is located between the first and second bays and features a half-glazed door with a timber gabled porch. The entrance to the fourth bay has panelled pilasters, dosserets adorned with flower motifs, and an open pediment. This entrance also includes a blocked fanlight with glazing bars and a nine-fielded panel door, two of which are glazed. The building has gable-end stacks and a cross-axial stack.
Hoopers Cottage, which is located to the rear, was originally a workshop and adjoins a short wing of Low Greengate House. It consists of four bays and includes a small lean-to outshut and an entrance with a pentice. The fenestration is varied, featuring casements and a three-light mullioned window, along with a gable-end stack and a cross-axial stack. Inside, there is the top part of a court cupboard from the 17th or early 18th century. The property is owned by the National Trust and was a gift from Beatrix Potter.
