Description
Castle Cottage is a house located in Claife near Sawrey, likely built in the 18th century with alterations and additions made around 1913. The building is constructed of roughcast stone and features a slate roof. The south facade has five bays, with the fifth bay projecting under a gable. The first two bays have a drip course, while the third and fourth bays are covered by a lean-to timber verandah. The windows are sash style, with single glazing bars and horns; the window between the first and second bays was probably originally an entrance. The ground floor of the third and fourth bays has French windows, and the fifth bay includes a two-storey canted bay window. There is a gable-end stack and two cross-axial stacks. The rear of the house has two wings with lean-to outshuts. The west facade features a door with a window beneath a dripstone, along with an entrance that has a gabled porch. This cottage was the home of Beatrix Potter after her marriage to William Heelis in 1913 and is currently owned by the National Trust.
