Description

Stones Lane Cottage, The Castle, Castle Barn Cottage, and Barn End Flat are four houses located in Claife, near Sawrey. They date from the late 18th century or early 19th century and have undergone later alterations and extensions. The buildings are constructed of roughcast stone with exposed stone sections at the rear and feature slate roofs.

The structure is L-shaped and two storeys high, with a south elevation that has seven bays. To the right, there is an outbuilding with a projecting one-storey gabled wing that has been converted for domestic use. The first bay is Stones Lane Cottage, while the second, third, and fourth bays make up The Castle. The end bays form Castle Barn Cottage.

The windows are sashed, with those in Castle Barn Cottage having horns. The ground floor windows have vertical glazing bars, while the first-floor windows feature glazing bars. There is a small-pane French window in the first bay. The Castle has a central entrance with a half-glazed fielded-panel door and a gabled trellis porch, while Castle Barn Cottage has a gabled porch.

The buildings include a gable-end stack and three cross-axial stacks. The left return has a lean-to outshut, and the right return features 20th-century infill panels, glazing, and an entrance to the one-storey wing, along with a gabled wing and a gabled barn entrance. The rear has a wing to the left, a two-storey outshut under a cat slide roof, and a gabled bay to the right. There are small-paned casements and one window with small-paned fixed glazing and an opening light. The wing, now known as Barn End Flat, has ground-floor garages and an end-gabled projecting bay on the return, along with a small lean-to outshut to the gable bay on the right.

Inside, there is a re-used plank and muntin partition from a former house. The property is owned by the National Trust and was a gift from Beatrix Potter.
