Public House. Probably C18 or early C19. Roughcast stone with slate roof. Two storeys, three bays, the 1st bay canted back, possibly later. Ground floor has bay window with hipped roof and paired sashes with horns to 1st bay; 2nd and 3rd bays have sashed windows, that to 2nd bay with vertical glazing bars, that to 3rd bay with glazing bars. 1st floor has sashed window with glazing bars to 1st bay, and small-paned casements to 2nd and 3rd bays. Entrance between 2nd and 3rd bays has timber gabled porch with clock to gable. Gable-end stacks. Left return has gabled 2-bay range to rear, with lean-to outshut projecting as single-pitch wing; gabled porch. Right return has lean-to outshut. Rear is low, built into hillside below Hill Top (q.v.).

The building was illustrated by Beatrix Potter in 'The Tale of Jemima Puddleduck' (1908), p.58, a reproduction of which is on inn sign to left return.
