Description

John Peel Cottage and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse and private house dating from the late 17th century, with alterations dated and inscribed over a side window as J & AS 1777 (John & Ann Scott). The building features cement render over mixed rubble on a chamfered plinth and has a graduated greenslate roof with cement coping and 19th-century yellow-brick chimney stacks. It is two storeys high with two bays, accompanied by a single-bay stable to the left under a common roof and a lower barn to the extreme left.

The cottage has sash windows in 18th-century surrounds on the left, a flat stone-mullioned window on the right, and an original chamfered-surround window above, although the stone mullion has been removed. The stable includes a stone porch with a side plank door, a small window to the right, and slit vents below the eaves. The rear of the house features a plank door in a painted stone surround and a two-light stone-mullioned stair window. There are chamfered-surround fire windows to the right on both floors and enlarged chamfered-surround windows to the left. The stable has an entrance and a loft above, while the barn to the right has a larger plank door.

This building was the home of John Peel, the famous huntsman, from the age of three weeks in 1777 until his marriage in 1797.
