Description
The linhay, barn, and farm buildings located on the north-east side of the foldyard at Bratton Court are of significant historical interest. The barn may date back to the 16th century, while the other buildings are from the 19th century. The linhay possibly incorporates parts of an earlier structure. The buildings are constructed from red sandstone random rubble, with the linhay featuring a clay tiled, steeply pitched roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles, and the barn covered with West Somerset slates and a half-hipped south end.
The layout is L-shaped, consisting of a 3-bay linhay running east-west, which is attached at right angles to a 5-bay barn that has an outbuilding connected at the north end. The east front of the barn has six irregular full-height stepped buttresses and central double doors, with 20th-century weatherboarding above and random rubble infill below. To the right, there is an unlit section of a single-storey outbuilding with a brick cornice and slate roof, leading to a gable end with double doors, a rectangular light, and a 20th-century lateral stair.
On the foldyard elevation, the barn features a full-height gabled porch that projects, with an unglazed opening to the left. Inside, there are five pairs of jointed cruck trusses, with some timbers having been renewed, and the porch addition includes two collar beam trusses. The interior is largely obscured by agricultural machinery.
The linhay consists of three bays supported by circular rubble piers, with the end bay on the right having a square-headed doorway. It abuts the solar wing of Bratton Court. Inside the linhay, there is a pointed arch opening in the east gable end that leads down two steps to the first floor, suggesting the existence of a two-storey structure at the east end, of which the rear wall of the linhay may be a part.
