Description

This is an early 18th-century house with a shop. The front of the building is timber-framed and rendered, with a dormer gable featuring painted slate-hanging. The rear shows painted stone rubble and asbestos slate-hanging, visible from King’s Bridge. A large, rendered chimney is at the rear, which had a tapered cap until it was reduced in height in 1977. The house originally comprised two rooms facing the street, with a parallel range to the rear left, and a wing set at a right angle to the rear right, which may be later additions. A lower wing, possibly a former detached building contemporary with the front range, is also set at a right angle to the rear left range.

The building is two stories high with a garret, and has three windows across the front. A mid-19th century shop front is on the right side, featuring two display windows separated by a single upright glazing bar, a central shop floor with a moulded frame, and a patterned fanlight. A matching house door is to the left. The upper story contains eight-paned sash windows in flush frames, with the centre window appearing blind and having painted glazing bars. A coved eaves cornice runs along the top. The dormer gable has eight-paned sash windows and swept slate-hanging to form a drip above it, with moulded bargeboards.

During an inspection in 1977, the interior revealed a staircase in the rear left range with thin, square balusters, and roof trusses with collars pegged to the faces of the principal rafters.
