Description
Adam's Hele Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with possible earlier origins and alterations made in the 19th century. The building features solid rendered walls and slated roofs, along with rendered chimneys. It has a three-room layout with a passage and a projecting wing at the upper end. There is a projecting newel staircase located on the left rear side of the wing. The lower end of the farmhouse has been reduced to a lean-to, with part of the rear wall still remaining, and the passage has been blocked. Additional rooms were likely added in front of the hall and passage during the 19th century. The farmhouse is two storeys tall, with the 19th-century addition including garrets.
The front of the building has three windows and three gables. The 17th-century wing on the left features three-light wood casements, with two in the front wall and one in the right side wall; each front light has three panes, while the side windows have two panes. The 19th-century addition includes mullioned-and-transomed wood casements. Within the right-hand gable is a 17th-century doorway with a chamfered wood frame and a cranked head; the right jamb has been renewed. An old plank door with ribbing in the 17th-century style has been added.
Inside, the hall contains a fireplace at the upper end with a large opening and a mantel shelf supported by shaped brackets. The inner room features an early 18th-century panelled cupboard. The wing has a cross-beam with a broad chamfer and step-stops. The newel stair has a square-headed ovolo-moulded door frame at the foot and another pair at the top, leading to rooms above the wing and hall. The room over the wing has old plastered roof trusses, with one likely being a jointed cruck and another possibly a raised cruck. There is also a late 17th-century cupboard with panelled doors, although the hall roof has not been inspected.
